Heart Transplantation to 29-Year-Old Patient from Sumy Region at the Heart Institute

May, 24, 2021

On the night of May 24, 2021, a heart transplant was performed at the Heart Institute. And it’s still a miracle! We are always grateful to the relatives of the deceased patients who agree to save other lives by transplanting the organs of their loved ones.

A young 29-year-old man from the Sumy region suffered from dilated cardiomyopathy and has been observed at the Heart Institute for 3 years. Transplantation was the only chance to prolong life. And so it happened. The donor was a patient of the Kyiv Regional Hospital who suffered a stroke and, unfortunately, doctors were unable to save him. He was selected as a donor by the only transplant information system in Ukraine that automatically connects recipients with donors. For information, currently, more than 700 people need a transplant in Ukraine.

The operation on the heart of the 29-year-old boy was performed by the team of the Heart Institute under the leadership of Gavril Kovtun: Oleg Loskutov, Andriy Patola, Oleksandr Postupalsky, Oleksandr Kiryaev, Oleksandr Revenko, Volodymyr Kolesnikov, Natalia Kopylchuk, Natalia Karpuk. Anna Melnyk supported the operation as a cardiologist.

Special thanks go to the Head of the Organ Transplant Center of the Kyiv Regional Hospital Mykhailo Zagriychuk and the General Director of the Ukrainian Transplant Coordination Center Dmytro Koval.
After the transplant and transfer of the patient from the intensive care unit to the organ transplant department, the patient will be recovering under the constant supervision of his treating cardiologist Anna Melnyk.

Meanwhile, we look forward to another example of how experience and innovation save lifes!
