Mechanical Heart Saved Patient’s Life
This week, a team of doctors led by Prof. Borys Todurov performed a mechanical heart implant surgery at the Heart Institute.
The patient, Ivan Volodymyrovych is 64 years old, he is a long-voyage sailor. Two months ago he had a heart attack which was treated conservatively, and later one artery was stented in Sumy. However, time was lost, the heart increased significantly in size, and there was a need for a heart transplant. Unfortunately, the patient had contraindications to transplantation, so it was decided to carry out surgical treatment – to implant a device for mechanical support of the left ventricle.
The operation was complicated. The mechanical heart was not sutured to the normal myocardium: the patient had a thinned and not sufficiently dense aneurysm, so first a tricuspid valve plastic surgery and resection of a giant postinfarction left ventricular aneurysm were performed, and then a mechanical heart was sutured to the remains of the aneurysm. This amount of intervention is unique. The operation was successful, the heart is working! With such a heart, patients can live up to 15 years.
