Ukrainian heart transplant surgeons from Kyiv are visiting Melbourne’s Alfred Hospital on a study and awareness tour, sharing their experiences of performing 63 heart transplants in 2025 during Russian rocket attacks, electricity blackouts and bombing raids.

Team of the Heart Institute headed by cardiac surgeon, Prof. Borys Todurov, and Kovel’s doctors transplanted a donor heart for the second time in two months after a long break.
On August 15, 2019, two patients met at the Heart Institute during a routine examination, to both of them, Professor Borys Todurov implanted mechanical hearts in the fall of 2018 – 47-year-old Vasyl Pavlyuk from Ternopil region and 42-year-old Denis Volkov from Odesa. The patient is a 62-year old man with a diagnosis – isolated severe mitral insufficiency. In the presence of concomitant pathology, an open operation was contraindicated. At the Heart Institute, the patient had an endovascular prosthetics of the mitral valve.
Recently at the Heart Institute, a transfemoral (implantation) implantation of the last-generation prosthesis of the aortic valve was conducted on an 84-year-old woman having been diagnosed with critical aortic stenosis with apparent calcification of the openings of the aortic valve.
