Andriy Khokhlov and a team of doctors performed transcatheter aortic valve implantation (TAVI) at the Heart Institute. The complexity of the situation was that the elderly patient was 80 years old, also, the patient was diagnosed with COVID-19.
The conference was extremely rich and productive.
Over the past year, significant progress has been made in Ukrainian transplantology and one of the topical issues highlighted by the conference is the creation of a full-fledged, civilized transplant system.
A 38-year-old man had a heart transplant last night in Zaporizhia. Prof. Borys Todurov took part in the surgery with a team of doctors from the Heart Institute and colleagues from Zaporizhia. The operation lasted a total of about 7 hours.
From February 18 to 25, 2021, a team of doctors from the Heart Institute of the Ministry of Health of Ukraine led by Prof. Borys Todurov shared their experience in Uzbekistan at the invitation of colleagues from the Republican Specialized Scientific and Practical Medical Center of Cardiology in Samarkand.
The trip was very intense, rich and bright.

The surgery was complicated. The mechanical heart was not sutured to the normal myocardium: the patient had a thinned and not sufficiently dense aneurysm, so first a tricuspid valve plastic surgery and resection of a giant postinfarction left ventricular aneurysm were performed, and then a mechanical heart was sutured to the remains of the aneurysm.
A 78-year-old patient underwent septal alcohol ablation of an obstructive form of hypertrophic cardiomyopathy last year, and after a reduction in the gradient, TAVI procedure was performed in safer conditions (to avoid suicide ventricle syndrome). The patient was discharged home in good condition.
With this operation, the specialists of the Heart Institute continue to introduce cosmetic accesses in patients with congenital heart defects. The method has significant advantages: it reduces the risk of complications, shortens the rehabilitation period, and in the long run, the results of the cosmetic intervention are much more effective.
It was a difficult year, but we survived it with dignity. Hundreds of patients treated with Covid-19, thousands operated this year, we performed 9 out of 10 transplants made in Ukraine, implanted a pacemaker in a pregnant patient, the weight of our youngest patient was 900 g, and the age of our oldest patient was 101 years.
