Hemitruncus Arteriosus
June 9, 2020, despite the ongoing pandemic, specialists of the children’s department of the Heart Institute of the Ministry of Health of Ukraine continue saving lives and fight for the health of children with congenital heart defects.
Today, a happy family with a healthy baby returns home after a complex reconstructive operation.
The infant was admitted to the ward at the age of 12 days, weighing only 3.2 kg with a diagnosis of Hemitruncus Arteriosus.
This is a rare defect, which is characterized by an abnormal departure of one of the branches of the pulmonary artery (PA) from the ascending aorta and the normal departure of another branch of the PA from the outflow tract of the right ventricle. In addition, the child was diagnosed with another congenital heart defect – a defect of the interventricular septum.
The only treatment for this pathology was an open-heart surgery with artificial circulation.
The Heart Institute’s specialists managed to correct all congenital anomalies during one operation thanks to the surgical team: the Head of the Neonatal and Premature Cardiac Surgery Department Iryna Aksonova, Vadym Sakalov, Dmytro Garbuz, Igor Khomenko, Olga Lastochkina, Maria Petryshak.
Cardiologist Lyudmila Davydko and pediatric intensive care unit cared for the baby – special thanks!
