Critical Aortic Coarctaction Surgery on 1.3 kg Premature Baby in the Heart Institute
On August 6, 2018, at the Heart Institute, Kyiv, a team of doctors – Vasyl Karpenko, Volodymyr Vashkeba, Irina Galamay – successfully operated a premature baby with a diagnosis of congenital heart defect – a critical coarctation of the aorta. The surgery lasted 4 hours. On August 8, the baby was breathing on his own already.
Oleksiy – one of the twins, was born in the 32d week of pregnancy. Due to the excessive lag in the mass (about one kilogram) compared to his twin brother, local doctors decided to do a cesarean section, after which an accurate diagnosis was established, and soon an Ambulance car took the baby from Kherson to Kyiv to the Heart Institute. At the time of surgery, the weight of the baby was 1.3 kg, age – 16 days.
No later than on Friday, August 10, a second boy, weighing 2.3 kg, met his brother in the regional hospital of Kherson, where the kids will continue to recover.
