The Second Heart Transplant in Lviv

August, 6, 2020

This is the fifth heart transplant in Ukraine in the last 8 months and the second at the Lviv Ambulance Hospital.

The heart was received by a 45-year-old patient from Chernivtsi, whose own heart was so affected by pneumonia with complications (ejection fraction – 11 – critically low) that required immediate transplantation. Fate favored Vasyl – the day before he came to the Heart Institute, Kyiv for another examination and then at 5 am next day an ambulance with a team of doctors left for Lviv.

The transplant was performed by prof. Borys Todurov with the team of doctors of the Heart Institute.
Many thanks to colleagues in Lviv led by Oleg Samchuk and boundless gratitude to the relatives of the patient who gave permission to take organs to save other people.

This time, a multi-organ organ collection was also performed – the heart, kidneys, and pancreas, the last was transplanted posthumously for the first time in Ukraine.

Specialists from Kyiv, Lviv, and Germany worked together and in harmony!
