Thursday and Friday this week at the Heart Institute turned out to be very fruitful – two heart transplants were successfully performed by Gavrylo Kovtun and a team of doctors of the Heart Institute. Two women received new hearts – a 53-year-old patient from Kyiv and a 48-year-old patient from Zaporizhzhia.
Our team performed transplantation of hearts and kidneys in Lutsk – in the organ transplantation department of the Volyn Regional Clinical Hospital together with colleagues of this institution.
A 29-year-old young man from Khmelnytskyi received the heart.
32-year-old Volodymyr from Kyiv received the heart.
A trip from Kyiv to Lutsk was needed because the donor was in Lutsk, and it was not possible to deliver the donor’s heart from there to Kyiv. Therefore, our team together with our patient headed to Lutsk where the transplantation was carried out that night.
Cardiac surgeon and director of the Heart Institute Prof. Borys Todurov removed a fragment of a projectile from the heart of a Ukrainian soldier, the heart continued to beat during the operation.
At the Heart Institute, a kidney was transplanted from a mother to her daughter! As of today, the two of them have already been transferred from the intensive care unit and are in the department in the ward. The kidney is working.
The heart was received by the 49-year-old patient from Mykolaiv who moved to Kiev after the beginning of the Russian invasion in Ukraine. He had to leave Kyiv for his new heart, because the donor was in Lutsk, and it was not possible to deliver the donor’s heart from there. So, our brigade drove with the patient all night to get to Lutsk as soon as possible.
Mykolai Medvedev is the first patient in Ukraine to undergo both stages of treatment – 1.5 years ago he had a mechanical heart implanted in the Heart Institute, and three weeks ago a donor heart was transplanted to him.
We continue to save our patients even in times of war.

Today was a significant event – for the first time at the Heart Institute, a family kidney transplant was performed: a mother donated a kidney to her 37-year-old son, who had been on dialysis for a long time. At the moment, both mother and son are feeling well, the kidney is working and the patients are undergoing planned postoperative rehabilitation!
This visit took place at the invitation of Georgian colleagues and our good friends at the same time.
It was also an additional opportunity to spread information about the war in Ukraine.
The Georgian colleagues understand us better than anyone.
