On July 6, 2018, two unique people with transplanted hearts – Ukrainian Eduard Sokolov and Frenchman Paul Baudry – met at the Heart Institute of the Heart. Edward’s heart was transplanted by Borys Todurov exactly 15 years ago – in July 2003. Paul received a new heart in 2009 at the Hopital de la Pitié clinic thanks to Dr. Aubert.
On July 5, 2018, a surgery of aortic valve replacement was conducted on a 45-year-old woman by Professor Borys Todurov at the Heart Institute. At the age of 16 the patient was diagnosed with an infective endocarditis of the aortic valve and in 1989 she was successfully operated. At that time a ball prosthesis of the aortic valve was implanted which successfully worked for 29 years. The surgery was completed successfully.

A boy was born on the 27th week of pregnancy weighing just 870 g and having two congenital heart diseases – coarctation of the aorta and aortic hypoplasia, the Botallo’s foramen failed to close after birth as well. For a month, doctors in Rivne, Ukraine cared for the infant and then transported the boy to the Heart Institute where the surgery was successfully conducted by a team managed by cardiac surgeon Vasiliy Karpenko and anesthesiologist Iryna Galamai.
Until recently, such a small weight (up to 1 kg) was considered almost a sentence, and children with such weight haven’t been operated for congenital heart disease.
For the first time in Ukraine, the aortic valve endoprosthesis of the new generation was implanted in the Heart Institute. The patient is 75 years old.

The patient, 75 years old, had a complex combined lesion of the aortic valve (a combined aortic defect with a predominance of stenosis), a marked loss of ascending aortic calcinosis and a number of concomitant diseases, which combined risk the traditional operation to be extremely high. Endovascular implantation of the aortic valve was the only opportunity to save his life.
