Thrombectomy on premature newborn weighing less than 1800 g

On September 25, 2018, a newborn from Zhytomyr Oblast, delivered a month ago at the 29th week of pregnancy with a weight of 1,400 g, was taken to the Heart Institute by an Ambulance with a diagnosis of subtotal thrombosis of the right atrium and floating thrombus of the left atrium. Upon arrival at the Institute, the boy’s weight was 1750.

A day before, the consortium of doctors, together with the Director of the Heart Institute of the heart Borys Todurov, on the basis of diagnostic data and tests, made a decision on urgent surgery.

Diagnostics and preparation of the child for emergency surgical intervention took about an hour.

The surgery for the removal of blood clots was carried out with artificial blood circulation and during the main stage under the deep hypothermia and complete stop of blood circulation.

The surgery was performed by the Head of the Department of the congenital heart diseases Iryna Aksonova with the team of doctors – Vladimir Vashkeba, Dmitry Garbuz, Iryna Galamay, Elena Dudko – and was successful, the life of the child was saved. The total length of the withdrawn blood clots was about 4 cm!

In the past year, this is the sixth case of the removal of blood clots in premature newborns weighing less than 2 kg. All operations were successful.
